Those born in the Year of the Dragon are believed to be ambitious, energetic, and charismatic, often inspiring others with their passion and enthusiasm. What Qualities Does the Dragon Represent? In 2024, we ring in the Year of the Dragon, one of 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac. The animal designations of the zodiac follow a 12-year cycle and are always used in the same sequence. According to tradition, no one should pick up a broom in case you sweep the good luck for the New Year out of the door! What Is the Animal for Chinese New Year This Year? People clean their homes and open their doors to let good luck enter. Sometimes, offerings are made to temples. Many children receive “lucky money” in red envelopes. “Good Luck” is also a common theme of the New Year. Longevity NoodlesĪnother popular recipe for New Year is Chinese Dumplings, symbolizing good luck and wealth. Families wrap them up and eat them as the clock strikes midnight. Of course, much delicious food is made and served! For the New Year, it’s traditional to serve long noodles, symbolizing a long life. The festivities continue for two weeks, finishing with a special lantern festival, which signals the end of the New Year celebration period. There are dragon dances, performances, and festival parades with music and acrobatics. Man-made paper lanterns are hung by the hundreds in public areas, bringing good luck to the new year. (Occasionally, the date celebrated may differ by one day or even one moon cycle due to time zones and other factors.) How Is the Lunar New Year Celebrated?Īs with many winter solstice celebrations, the symbolic darkness of night is banished by the light of fireworks, lanterns, and candles. Many other countries in East Asia, including Vietnam, Korea, Japan, and the Philippines, hold their own New Year celebrations at this time. Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is the most celebrated and longest of all Asian festivals and is observed by millions of people worldwide. ( Note: China follows the Gregorian calendar for daily business but still follows the Chinese calendar for important festivals, auspicious dates such as wedding dates, and the Moon phases.) Who Celebrates Lunar New Year?Īlthough this holiday is commonly called “Chinese New Year” in the West, China is not the only country to observe it. Just like New Year according to the Gregorian calendar (January 1), Lunar New Year celebrations start on the night before the first day of the new year. The Chinese lunisolar calendar shares some similarities with the Hebrew calendar, which is also lunisolar, and it has influenced other East Asian calendars, such as those of Korea and Vietnam.īecause the Chinese calendar defines the lunar month containing the winter solstice as the 11th month, the Lunar New Year usually falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice. This ancient calendar dates back to the 14th century BCE (whereas the Gregorian calendar was introduced in 1582). The traditional Chinese calendar is a lunisolar calendar based on astronomical observations of the Sun’s position in the sky and the Moon’s phases. See our Moon Phase Calendar for local times.) Why Are There Different New Years? (Note: Due to the difference in time zones, the new Moon may technically occur one calendar date earlier or later in the United States. But in August 1814 Great Britain surprised the United States by marching toward Washington, D.C. forces in the region were sent to defend that city against attack. Key now changed his own position on the war and enlisted in the militia of Washington, D.C., serving as an aide to General Walter Smith.ĭuring the summer of 1814, Americans leaders believed that the British would attack Baltimore, an important East Coast shipping center with a large population. The British went on the offensive and seemed likely to invade several areas of the United States. But in 1814 the nature of the war shifted when the Napoleonic Wars (1800-1815) ended and Great Britain was able to devote more troops and resources to the conflict in North America. The British burn Washington, D.C.ĭuring the first two years of the war, Key sided with members of the Federalist political party, who opposed the Republican administration of President James Madison (1751-1836 see biographical entry) and did not support the war effort. All of these factors led to the United States declaring war with Great Britain in June 1812. In addition, Great Britain had been impressing American sailors (forcing them into the British navy) it claimed were British citizens, and some Americans also thought that the British were involved in stirring up trouble with the Native Americans in the western territories. The war in Europe between Great Britain and its allies and France, under the leadership of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), had led to trade restrictions that many in the United States felt were unfair. Costs decrease when real-time data and access eliminates unnecessary duplicate testing and frustrating, time-consuming manual tasks. A few years later, the concept evolved to become known as the Quadruple Aim to include clinician well-being. Improving Care, Lowering Costs, Serving Populations, Elevating Work Life. In 2007, the Institute of Healthcare Improvement introduced the Triple Aim, a concept of improved patient experience, better outcomes, and lower costs as key to health care transformation ( 4 ). Evidence-based practices have increased in popularity since they were first introduced, especially in developing nursing practice, public policy. It also aligns hospital policies to promote the use of HIT with processes and workflows, focusing on value rather than volume.Īt the bedside, this reliable clinical decision support system encourages best practices and collaborative standardized care. The Quadruple Aim in Nursing and Healthcare. Example Topic in Nursing: Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim To make decisions in the clinical setting, evidence-based practice significantly depends on using existing scientific facts. Improving healthcare quality has been firmly on the U.S. The Quadruple Aim framework has merit for all of us-nurses are. What is the Quadruple Aim Four strategies for improving healthcare. Nurses at all organizational levels, use the services of a hospital EPC to inform nursing policy and practice, and are highly satisfied with the process, supporting the Quadruple Aim and Magnet designation. From this meeting entitled Nursing Leadership and the Quadruple Aim: Framing Contribution and Influencing the Future four main themes emerged. 2 This article addresses the health care provider’s work environment, the Triple Aim, and the evolution of what is. A dedicated hospital EPC in partnership with nursing offers a unique mechanism for promoting a culture of evidence-based practice. Value based healthcare should be driven by patients, clinicians and the community. Patient care is widely accepted in the United States as an important agenda, but the Triple Aim also has 2 secondary goals: improving the patient experience and reducing costs. These four essentials of value are also known as the quadruple aim. Public health is a vibrant field, drawing experts from nursing, epidemiology, health education and environmental health, among others. Ive long held the belief that patient experience and nursing engagement are highly correlated. The primary focus of the Triple Aim is patient care. Similarly, genuine community engagement fosters a more effective public health system. How can we give caregivers easy-to-use technology that gives them comprehensive, longitudinal pictures of patients’ clinical histories and treatments, regardless of where it was received in the hospital, post-acute system, or even the clinic setting? A fully integrated system enables better, faster decisions. The Quadruple Aim asserts that enriching patient experiences fosters a more effective health care system. The Quadruple Aim In Nursing And Healthcare Improving Care, Lowering Costs, Serving Populations, Elevating Work Life Paperback. That’s why it’s time to look at true interoperability. Innovations in technology, including predictive analytics. So how do we go about improving the work life of care providers, especially in light of changing payer models and increased regulation?Ī leading point of caregiver dissatisfaction is the inability to access and exchange crucial patient information that impacts patient outcomes. The newest arm of the Quadruple Aim, which addresses the wellbeing of nurses, physicians and other care providers (Bodheimer & Sinsky, 2014), is enhanced by predictive analytics to alleviate untoward effects of taxing patient care that cause nurse dissatisfaction and burnout. For patients, that leads to better medical regiment compliance and overall satisfaction, and means less costly turnover for providers. We convene learning networks to share best practices and proven approaches, and we develop capacity within organizations for population and community health improvement. As healthcare professionals (and patients, ourselves) we know that happy and engaged providers offer better care and instill a sense of trust. IHI is helping partners to understand and stratify the needs of their populations, to activate those populations to improve their health, and to map and utilize all assets in their communities to achieve equitable outcomes. It is clear that nursing leaders have long been instrumental in actualizing each component of the Quadruple Aim. The last time the Packers had the third place schedule was 2019 when they went 13-3, won the division and reached the NFC Championship Game. Green Bay has a third place schedule following its disappointing 2022 season. And if that happens, the Packers will be one of the NFL’s surprise teams in 2023. But there’s plenty of talent for this to become a top-10 defense. It’s a leap of faith betting on Barry, who has been a subpar defensive coordinator in Detroit, Washington and now Green Bay. The Packers have an elite trio of cornerbacks, a pair of athletic inside linebackers, a gifted group of pass rushers once Rashan Gary returns, and athleticism up front. Over the final four games, Green Bay allowed 17.3 points per game and improved to 26 th against the run and to 17 th in total defense. The good news is Green Bay did make strides in the final month of the season.Īfter 13 weeks, the Packers ranked 30 th in rushing defense, 18 th in total defense and were allowing 23.2 points a game. And that’s what you can’t do in this league.” “I think if you do go back and really critique last year, the inconsistencies were the things that really got us,” Barry said. And that level of mediocrity was a major reason the Packers finished 8-9 and missed the postseason. And Barry must get more from that unit than he has to date.īarry’s defense was respectable in 2021, but took a step back last year and finished 17 th in both total defense and scoring defense. The Packers have an NFL-high eight first round draft picks on the defensive side of the ball. And if Barry can’t get it done this season, his days of being a coordinator are likely finished. Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry is on the hottest of hot seats. “We took him for a reason back in 2020, he’s been progressing nicely, and to see him kind of take the jump he did this past year was nice.” “I think whenever players progress, it factors into all the decisions that you’re making,” Gutekunst said of Love. It took a while, but that was the type of player general manager Brian Gutekunst envisioned when he traded up four spots in the 2020 draft to take Love. Love played in four games in 2022 and finished the year 14-of-21 for 195 yards with one TD, no interceptions and a quarterback rating of 112.2. Ironically, Love’s breakout performance came nearly 15 years to the day that Rodgers showed the Packers he could be their heir apparent to Favre with a memorable performance in Dallas. Enter Love who went 6-of-9 for 113 yards, had a quarterback rating of 146.8 and led the Packers to 10 points on his two drives. 27, Rodgers left the game with a rib injury early in the fourth quarter. Love showed tremendous improvement from his first two seasons during those practices - and then shined when his number was called last year.ĭuring a 40-33 loss at Philadelphia on Nov. Rodgers skipped the majority of Green Bay’s 2022 offseason program, giving Love ample opportunity to work with the No. But he has all the qualities that you’re looking for in a guy to be successful.” And he at this point just needs to play and work on processing information, making quick decisions, then getting it to the right guy. “He’s athletic, he can move around, buy time, and he’s intelligent and he generally makes good decisions. 1, which you need to do in the NFL,” Packers veteran quarterback coach Tom Clements said of Love. He is a leader of the team and Friday, Las Vegas coach Josh McDaniels raved about every aspect of what Adams brings to the team and called him a future Hall of Famer.“Well … he can throw the ball, No. Through four games this season, Adams has 33 catches for 397 yards and three touchdowns. He was an All-Pro last season as he had 100 catches for 1,516 yards and 14 touchdowns. The Raiders gave Adams’ his desired new contract as part of the deal and it was a monster contract at five years, $140 million.Īdams was been as advertised with the Raiders. Still, it was stunning when the trade went down. The Raiders were rumored to be his desired destination in part because he was close friends and college teammates with then-Raiders quarterback Derek Carr and the fact that Las Vegas is close to his hometown of East Palo Alto, California. Adams was frustrated with Green Bay and wanted to be dealt. The Adams trade shocked the league when it occurred March 17, 2022. The second-round pick was part of a trade package used to draft starting wide receiver Christian Watson at No 34. Those picks became starting linebacker Quay Walker (a strong tackler) at No. This, of course, is the first meeting between the two teams since the March, 2022 blockbuster trade that sent star wide receiver Davante Adams to the Raiders and 2022 first (No. It should be one of the biggest storylines (non Travis- Kelce-Taylor Swift category) in the NFL in Week 5. In the end, Joe was trying to elicit a confession from Matt, and when he does, he is zipped back to reality, where he finds he's been blocked by the entire world. When he finds out his daughter is actually the product of an affair Beth had, he kills her father. When people are blocked, only static appears and is heard in place of their bodies. She ended up blocking Joe, which means he couldn't see her or any of her family - until she dies, at least. Joe then tells Matt about his fiancé Beth and the time they disagreed on whether she would get an abortion. To turn the alarm fully off, press any button twice. And if you want to roll back into bed, you can set the snooze timer for nine minutes by pressing any of the buttons on the back. The alarm is also adjustable, with five different volume settings, so you can fine-tune the beeps to ensure you roll out of bed every time. It has a tone that isn’t so loud that it makes you jump out of bed, but it also isn’t so quiet that you’ll sleep right through it. First and foremost, the Jall is a solid alarm clock that will comfortably wake you up. The Jall Wooden Digital Alarm Clock looks nice, but we didn’t name it the best alarm clock just because of its looks. We can imagine one of its colors matching with nearly any interior decor. But when switched on, the time appears in a gentle white light behind the wood. When the clock isn’t plugged in or the display is off, it looks like a solid wooden block. But it also comes in three other finishes (black, brown and white), all of which have a clean, almost Japandi look. We tested the “yellow” clock, which looks like a nice pine. While there are plenty of fun and helpful features of the Jall, one of the most striking aspects is its design. You can toggle the dimmable display between showing temperature or the date as well as a “Sound Control” mode, which turns off the display and automatically turns it back on when movement or sound is detected. Speaking of extra features, this clock can show you the humidity and temperature of your room, which are actually critical factors to getting restful sleep. You can also choose if you want the alarms to go off every day or on weekdays only, which was another pleasant feature that was absent from many of the Jall’s competitors. Whenever you set or change your alarm, you have the option to set two other alarms as well, so you can have three different alarms active at once. The scroll wheel was especially useful, allowing you to speed through the numbers for hours and minutes instead of repeatedly pressing a button. Setting the time and alarm took us less than a minute when we first plugged it in, which was refreshingly short compared to other clocks. To set the time or alarm, all you have to do is press and hold a button and use the wheel to change the numbers on the screen. The Jall clock has a panel on the backside that houses all the controls, including three small buttons, four switches and a scrolling wheel. It’s got a 5-foot cord that should reach most outlets comfortably, and comes with a CR2032 battery that backs up your settings (although the small plastic latch that opens the battery door snapped off when we pulled too hard, so be careful when you need to switch the battery). Right out of the box, this clock was easy to use and setup was a breeze. Plus, at $25 (or less), the Jall Wooden Alarm Clock is equipped with incredibly useful features, such as the ability to set multiple alarms, humidity and temperature readings and a feature that puts the display to sleep and automatically wakes it back up if it senses movement or sound. It’s got a polished feel to it, and its wooden design gives it a look unlike any other clocks we tested. It’s simple to set, easy to read in the dark and has an alarm that is loud but won’t scare you awake. The Jall Wooden Digital Alarm Clock has everything you need - and more - in an alarm clock. And then there is Nio already offering a 150 kWh semi-solid battery with its vehicles, and Zeekr 001 with its record breaking 140 kWh Qilin battery pack - from CATL. Wu Kai's not-so-optimistic stance against the backdrop of Toyota's announcement to produce solid-state batteries by 2027, adds a touch of intrigue to the global battery drama. Once hailed as the successors of the lithium-ion reign, their future now looks a bit less certain. While CATL's achievements sound exciting, they've also thrown a shadow over the future of solid-state batteries. The company's next goal is to shave the charging time down to a mere 5 to 7 minutes for the same range, which sounds borderline magical - at least in comparison to current tech. While the range is hard to comment on without knowing the capacity, the charging time certainly is impressive. It plans to roll out an EV battery that can be recharged within 10 minutes and offer a respectable 400 km of driving range. The ambitious Chinese battery maker promises more than just cold-weather performance. These numbers certainly provide some warmth amidst the icy cold of skepticism, but the absence of explicit details about the electrolyte's development is like a stubborn frost that refuses to melt. The company claims its new electrolyte development can supercharge EV batteries even in frigid conditions, but should we readily buy into this excitement?Īt a recent Shanghai forum, CATL's chief scientist Wu Kai unveiled an intriguing proposition - an electrolyte claimed to boost the charging efficiency of lithium-ion batteries by a whopping 50% in -20☌ conditions, and 43% under normal temperatures. Enter CATL, the world's leading EV battery manufacturer, asserting that they have cracked the code. Charging efficiency and range become victims of lower mercury levels. Robin Zeng, CATL chairman, said last year that it is essential to reduce carbons emissions in the batteries, which account for nearly 40% of all carbon emissions produced in the cycle of battery electric vehicles. The commitments are important for CATL to meet increasing standards and regulations for the carbon footprint of its batteries in Europe and the United States as CATL expands into those markets. The company is working with unspecified partners to ensure the battery is qualified for aviation use in terms of safety and quality, Wu added.Īnd CATL would also be able to start mass production of the condensed matter battery for electric vehicle uses later this year, he said. It would have an energy density of 500 Watt hours per kilogram (Wh/kg), Wu said. The battery is a type of semi-solid state product with condensed electrolyte and new anode and separator materials. The battery giant’s chief scientist, Wu Kai, who spoke to reports at the Shanghai auto show, said the battery could supply enough energy to power electric passenger aircraft for civil aviation use. Chinese battery company CATL revealed on Wednesday that it is looking to produce condensed matter batteries – for both electric vehicles and passenger airplanes.
